Adam Lennox missed a first-half penalty as Seaham Red Star were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at home to West Allotment Celtic.

An eventful first half full of missed chances for both sides was dominated by the goalkeepers, as both Jack Patton and Reece Monaghan both made crucial saves.

West Allotment Celtic were put on the back foot second half after Scott McCarthy’s red card but held out for a deserved point as Star were unable to break down Allotment’s sturdy defence.

The draw sees Star remain in 11th on 41 points, as they looked to secure a top half finish in their last six games of the season.

Mark Collingwood gave a rare start to Patton in the place of Andrew Jennison as his side looked to build on Tuesday’s cup win over Crook.

Star almost made the perfect start as Monaghan fumbled a cross out to Lennox, who failed to control the ball and put over from the edge of the box.

Allotment were gifted several chances from mistakes by the Star backline, as both Jordan Patterson and Daryll Donnelly struggled against McCarthy in the Allotment attack.

Star were then given a golden opportunity from the spot as Danny Sayer was fouled in the area, but Lennox’s spot kick met the outstretched leg of Monaghan to keep the scores level at half time.

An hour in, Allotment’s chances of getting something took a significant hit as McCarthy was sent off for kicking Patton in the head while chasing a loose ball in a horror challenge.

However, Star were unable to create anything clear cut, with a blatant penalty appeal turned down by the referee for a foul on Louis Anderson and a close effort from Joshua Baggs the closest they got.

Allotment held out to secure a 0-0 draw at the Independent Utility Advice Arena as Star were unable to break down a 10-man side for the second time in a week.
