RCA and Seaham share points
Sunderland RCA and Seaham Red Star shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Meadow Park on Monday morning.
In a game played in drizzly conditions, James Robinson put Seaham ahead in the 18th minute, but Mark Davison’s 77th minute penalty pulled RCA level.
RCA finished the game with ten men after goalkeeper Jonathan Ball was sent off, but they held on to claim a point.
Upon kick-of at a wet Meadow Park, it was Seaham who were the brighter in the early exchanges. Inside the opening five minutes, they had a couple of shots blocked, and in the sixth minute, they went close when Joe Hailes’ cross dropped onto the crossbar.
In the 12th minute, Seaham hit the crossbar for the second time. Mark Waite climbed to meet a cross, but his header bounced back off the crossbar.
Tom Lawson then went close for Red Star, before they deservedly took the lead in the 18th minute. James Robinson took aim from 20 yards, and his shot took a deflection. The deflection made it difficult for Ball who did well to get a strong hand on it, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the ball from finding a way into the bottom corner.
As the first half wore on, RCA found themselves getting back into the game, but they couldn’t create any clear cut chances.
Having taken the lead, Seaham were managing the game well.
Five minutes before the break, RCA created their best chance yet. A wide free-kick wasn’t cleared despite a couple of chances to, and it dropped to Simon Jakab who fired over.
Thibault Charmey went close for Seaham in the 43rd minute, and from the resulting corner, Lawson headed wide.
Seaham went into the break ahead, and it was a deserved lead.
Just three minutes into the second half, Davison had a chance from a cross for the hosts, but his header was comfortably saved by Andrew Jennison.
By the hour mark, Sunderland RCA created a couple of other half chances, but there were no clear cut chances.
Halfway through the second half, both sides had good chances within 30 seconds of each other. Firstly, Jonny Carr fired narrowly over for Sunderland RCA, before Lawson forced a save from Ball at the other end.
Josh Elcoate headed over for Seaham in the 73rd minute, before a scramble in the RCA penalty area was eventually cleared.
In the 77th minute, RCA pulled level through a penalty. Waite brought down Michael Annang-Colquhoun leaving the referee no option but to point to the spot, and Davison stepped up to send the ‘keeper the wrong way.
Now level, it looked as though it could have gone either way, but with just shy of five minutes to play, the momentum was swung back in the favour of Seaham. RCA goalkeeper Ball made a right mess of what should have been a simple take, and it resulted with him bringing Daniel Sayer down on the edge of the penalty area. Rather surprisingly, the referee sent Ball off, meaning centre back Jakab had to go in goal. Lee Kerr took responsibility of the resulting free-kick, and his drilled effort crashed back off the crossbar.
In the second minute of added time, Seaham should have won it. It was three on two as a quick Seaham break down the right looked very dangerous. A low ball was played to Lawson at the back post, but his shot back across goal missed the target. He should have scored.
That proved to be that, and the points were shared.
