Danny Sayer’s header sees Seaham win at home

Danny Sayer’s recent goalscoring form continued as his second-half header secured a 1-0 win for Seaham Red Star over Whickham in their final home game of the season.

In a feisty encounter with very few chances, it was always going to take one goal to win the game, and Sayer provided it with a bullet header just after half-time.

The win keeps Star in with a chance of a top-half finish as they remain 11th on 51 points, while Whickham remain 8th.

Star went into the game looking for their first home league win since defeating North Shields on February 5, while Whickham arrived on a 10-game unbeaten run.

Whickham did begin the game strongly, troubling the Seaham defence for the opening 20 minutes, with Danny Barlow going closest from a free kick.

Chances then became rare as the half wore on as the game began to become feisty, with Sayer, Thomas Bott, Daryll Donnelly and Zak Atkinson all booked before the half was out.

On 55 minutes, Seaham made the breakthrough, as Whickham failed to clear a corner properly, and the resultant cross found the head of Sayer, who thumped the ball past Chris Bannon.

Whickham pushed for an equaliser, but were limited to long-range efforts, as Seaham were able to hold on for a hard-fought victory.
