A goal either side of a Sonni Coleman penalty secured the Stars passage into the preliminary round of the competition, condemning Redcar to early season FA Cup exit.

Manager Mark Connolly made three changes to the side which lost to Newton Aycliffe in midweek, bringing in the experienced Joe Hailes. Liam Hodgson and Carl Lawson

Redcar had the lion’s share of opportunities in the early exchanges of the tie, with Seaham goalkeeper Jennison on hand to deny Coleman in the opening minutes, gathering well from an Owen Clarkson attempt moments later with bodies lurking in the area.

The Steelmen soon lost a foothold in the contest, conceding the opening goal 18 minutes in from a corner, Mark Robinson tucking the ball away after a headed attempt at the back post, dropped right at his feet.

Seaham’s lead lasted only ten minutes, however, with Redcar forward Sonni Coleman earning a spot-kick after minimum contact in a challenge from Donnelly in the area, burying the penalty comfortably by sending Jennison the wrong way, bringing the two sides level at the break.

The second period flowed in a similar vein to the first, with clear-cut chances very much at a premium for both sides.

Redcar managed to work a few early shots at goal but failed to test the keeper; Coleman fired wide from range on two occasions, whilst McGuckin planted a headed effort narrowly off target from Isaac Walker’s swerving delivery.

With just under 20 minutes to go, Seaham capitalised on a golden opportunity to gain the advantage, skipper Tommy Bott rolling the ball into an empty net after Simpkin had spilled a long range attempt from Mark Robinson.

The Steelmen scrapped to try and find another equaliser but struggled to turn possession into any sort of offensive pressure or chances at goal.

Coleman came closest to drawing Redcar level in the 75th minute, bearing down on goal with only the keeper to beat, with Jennison getting down well to deny the forward from a tight angle.

One last headed effort from Sonni Coleman later, the referee’s whistle sounded, and the cheers rang out from the Seaham section as they progressed into the next round of the Emirates FA Cup, knocking the Steelmen out for the second year in a row.

Team Jennison, Hailes, Taylor, Donnelly, Nelson, Patterson, Robinson J, Lawson C (Lawson T), Bott, Robinson M, Hodgson.
