Goals in the final 20 minutes from Michael Chilton, David Robinson and Dan Wilson overturned Karl Ross’ 62nd minute opener at Ashington on Saturday afternoon, as The Star leapfrogged their opponents and rose to 15th in the table with a second league win in a row.

It was the hosts who came out of the blocks quickest.

The Colliers looked to capitalise on the strong wind behind them, with a succession of long balls forcing Liam Gillesphey and Ryan McKinnon to work hard but impressively at the heart of the Seaham defence during the opening exchanges.

Lee Scott shot narrowly wide in the 15th minute, but it was one of few openings allowed by Mark Collingwood’s side, despite the pressure.

It was such solid foundations upon which they were able to begin posing a threat of their own. Five minutes later, Wilson was on the end of Paul Weldon’s cross but headed wide.

And Chilton did likewise in the 30th minute off the back of good work by Scott Young and Daniel Hawkins, after another spell of pressure had been navigated well by Gillesphey and co.

Richard Coulson then offered a moment of encouragement of his own when he cut in from the left in the 35th minute and fired wide, but Ashington were still coming.

Both Gillesphey and goalkeeper Chris Bannon needed to be sharp from successive corners to help the deliveries away from danger in the last notable action of the half.

The wind may not have been as strong come the restart, but Seaham still took a hold of the game.

Sean McRoberts and David Henderson were conducting proceedings with increasing authority in the centre of the park and both Wilson and Chilton came close in the opening quarter of the second-half.

But then Ashington delivered a classic sucker-punch. David Luke and Brandon Slater led a rare venture forwards by the hosts and Ross finished it with a ruthless finish that left Bannon helpless.

Within 10 minutes Seaham had responded, though. Wilson was fouled by Curtis Coppen and Chilton converted the resulting 20-yard free-kick superbly beyond Adam McHugh.

David Robinson, introduced in the 70th minute, set about leading the search for victory. He flashed an inviting ball across the six-yard box that was narrowly missed by both Wilson and Chilton in the 74th, but had more luck come the 88th.

Wilson saw an effort blocked by James Harmison but Robinson was quickest onto the loose-ball and he fired it home to give The Star a well-earned lead.

Then, in the third minute of stoppage-time, it was his defence splitting pass that broke the offside trap and sent Wilson through to extend the advantage and all but seal victory.

The No.9 collected the pass and the finish it deserved as he lifted the ball over the advancing McHugh and into the net.

Ashington boss Ian Skinner was shown a red card after approaching referee Alex Clarke in the moments following the final whistle, with the hosts unhappy with a number of decisions on the day.

Seaham, though, did what they needed to do on the day. It was a display worthy of the three points and their late flurry of ruthlessness earned them just that.
