Seaham progress in League Cup with victory over Newcastle University

Seaham Red Star booked their spot in the last 16 of the Northern League Cup with a 2-1 win at home to Newcastle University on Tuesday night.

Seaham went into the game knowing only a win would see them qualify from the group, and goals from Morgan Dart and Jaden Cahill-Taylor helped the Star to just that.

Keith Douglas put the University ahead in the 17th minute, but Seaham responded through Dart seven minutes later.

Dart then missed a second half penalty, but Cahill-Taylor’s strike 15 minutes from time helped the hosts progress.

On a very windy night in east Durham, a sparse crowd of just 42 turned out.

Upon kick-off, it was Seaham who were the more creative early on. Dart fired wide after promising build up play, before a glancing header wasn’t too far wide.

However, in the 17th minute, the visitors broke the deadlock and it was heavily influenced by the wind. A Seaham man, 25 yards from his own goal, looked to play a high ball. It caught the wind and was carried backwards all the way to go for a corner. Douglas took the resulting corner, and his inswinging ball again caught the wind and found a way directly into the far top corner.

Just seven minutes later, Seaham were level. Richie Coulson’s initial effort was well blocked, but the ball fell to Dart who tucked the ball into the net.

Just before the half hour mark, the visitors went close to regaining their lead. Joel Feirn took aim from the edge of the area, but Aaron Steavens was equal to his effort. The rebound fell to Douglas, and his effort came crashing back off the crossbar.

David Robinson and Robbie Christie both tried their luck as the first half wore on for the students, before Taylor Richardson and Sean McRoberts both tried their luck for Seaham to no avail.

Following the break, Seaham had the wind on their side, and they looked to take immediate advantage. A sloppy pass in the Newcastle University defence gifted Seaham’s David Robinson possession, but his shot was well saved.

Substitute Tom Romano was the source of Newcastle University’s first second half chance. He burst down the wing and cut in to beat his man before playing a low ball towards the back post. Numerous players flung themselves at it, but the defender managed to hack the ball to safety.

In the 56th minute, Seaham had a great chance to take the lead with a penalty. Dart’s quick feet drew a foul, and the referee pointed to the spot. Dart dusted himself down to take responsibility, but goalkeeper Daniel Dekanski guessed correctly and saved. The rebound was also saved, and another rebound was bundled home, but the assistants flag came to the students’ saviour this time.

A well-struck Seaham free-kick forced a clever save from Dekanski soon after, before Romano had a scuffed effort saved at the other end.

As the second half wore on, the hosts were on top, but they weren’t creating many clear-cut chances.

However, with 15 minutes to play, they took the lead. A simple through ball played Cahill-Taylor in, and he confidently slotted home.

The University were struggling to create anything with the wind against them, and Seaham had numerous chances to extend their lead late on, but it wouldn’t matter as the final whistle ensured the Red Star of a spot in the last 16 where they’ll face a trip to Division Two leaders West Allotment Celtic.
