The Star bowed out of this season’s League Cup following a dismal display at second division Birtley Town.

Red Star manager brought in Cieran Jackson, Matty Lowery and Kyle Oliver, Anth Myers and Lee Hetherington were left out because of niggling injuries.

Seaham made a bright start with Jackson setting up David Palmer to cross from the left side and his ball into the six yard box just evaded Jon Weirs at the far post. Palmer was back five minutes later with a shot from 18 yards that was held by home keeper Jordan Bolton. Seaham continued to press and had lots of possession but the final ball was often missing and Bolton was untroubled in Birtley’s goal. The game changed in the thirtieth minute with a goal to the hosts in their first attack. Good work from Ally White set up an opportunity for Joseph Barwick, the strikers shot somehow squeezed past Hunter and nestled in the Seaham goal. The Star again went onto the attack but never created anything to worry the home defence.

The second half followed the same pattern with Seaham retaining possession but failing to trouble keeper Bolton. Manager Collingwood introduced both Vinnie Gash and Tommy Scott early in the half and played with 3 strikers. Home keeper Bolton pulled off a terrific save from a Kyle Oliver free kick, then pushed a header from dan Wilson onto the bar and to safety. Twenty minutes from time a bad misjudgement by Weldon saw Smith get goal side and Weldon’s tog of the striker’s shirt saw referee Helen Conley award a penalty. Smith steeped up and fired past Hunter to double Birtley’s lead. With the Star pushing to get back into the game the hosts took advantage of the spaces left and Hunter was forced into a couple of saves to keep the score down.

Birtley deserved the win as the Red Star never turned possession into chances. Youg loanee Cieran Jackson was Seahams best player on the night.
