Lee Hetherington replaced Sam Steele in the starting line up for today’s FA Vase tie against Durham City played at Willington FC’s ground.

Seaham started in the ascendency and home keeper Joe Wilson kept out a Paul Gardiner drive in the 3rd minute, this was the keepers first of many saves in what was to be a busy afternoon for the youngster. The Red Star continued to press and David Palmer fired just over the bar on 10 minutes. Durham mounted their first attack after 20 minutes but an overhit pass rolled through to Seaham’s keeper Andy Hunter, the keeper hurried his clearance and knocked it into the path of home striker Gredziack, who lofted the ball over the keeper from 40 yards, incredibly the ball bounced up and hit the bar before Hunter collected the rebound.  Seaham went upfield and good build up play involving Hetherington and Weirs created an opening and Toward ran onto Hetherington’s through ball and pushed his shot past Wilson to open the scoring for Seaham in the 25th minute. The Star had a penalty appeal turned  in the 30th minute when Gardiner was felled, however, referee Mr McMahon ruled in to be outside the area from Hetherington’s free kick Gardiners shot was well blocked by Wilson. The Star did increase their lead when Codie Howe headed in Hetherington’s cross from the left. On the stroke of half time, Seaham were awarded a penalty when Myers was bundled over by Dan Johnston, Vinnie Gash stepped p and crashed the ball home for his first goal for the Star.

The second period continued with the same pattern of play with Seaham pushing for more goals. Wilson was performing heroics in the home goal and kept out efforts from Gash, Palmer and Weirs before Gash netted his second on 60 minutes with a tap in after good work by Jon Weirs. Seaham scored their 5th and final goal in the 72nd minute, Gash controlled a cross from Toward on his chest turned centre back Harrison and lifted the ball over the advancing Wilson to complete his hat trick.

The Star were always on top in this cup tie and it was down to Joe Wilson to keep the score down, Vinnie Gash led the line well and was well worth his first hat trick for the club, Lee Hetherington collected the man of the match performance with his continuous probing from midfield.
