A first-half double from Alex Bruton condemned Seaham Red Star to a shock 2-1 home defeat against struggling Northallerton Town.

A defensive error allowed Bruton to score his first on 10 minutes, before he doubled the lead two minutes before the interval.

Star did pull a goal back in first-half stoppage time by virtue of a Louis Anderson penalty but couldn’t find a second to complete the comeback.

Star remain 11th on 44 points after the defeat with four games to play, while Northallerton are 17th on 29 points, five points clear of the drop zone, as their miracle revival goes on.

Mark Collingwood made several changes, most notably resting striker Adam Lennox, for Saturday’s game.

Star struggled to get going early on despite dominating possession, unable to create any clear cut chances, and were punished on ten minutes.

A ball down the left wing found the feet of Bruton, who evaded a sliding challenge before expertly burying the ball past Andrew Jennison.

Star again dominated the play after the goal but were restricted to long range efforts, most notably from Thomas Bott and Tom Lawson.

On 43 minutes, it was two as great play down the Northallerton left by Joey Hope allowed him to cut the ball back to Bruton, who had the simple task of passing it into the net.

Seaham were gifted a lifeline in stoppage time, as Lawson was brought down by the throat just inside the area for a penalty, which Anderson swiftly slotted down the middle.

Northallerton should’ve made it three on 66 minutes, as a lapse of Star concentration allowed the ball to fall to Luke Jones six yards out, but he skied it out of the stadium.

Star thought they had their equaliser on 72 minutes as a corner ball whipped in was missed completely by the Northallerton goalkeeper and went into the net via a deflection but was ruled out for a push.

Despite late pressure from Star, they were unable to find their equaliser and Northallerton ran away with the points.
