Kick-Off

The Star recorded their first win of the season 2-0 at Bishop Auckland. Andy Johnson was taunted for most of the game by the home fans on his return to Bishops but he had the last laugh when he opened the scoring for Seaham, not long after Nathan greenwood added the second to clam all 3 points.

Seaham manager Mark Collingwood was without Young, Sullivan, Waite, Hawkins and Lawrence and was forced to gamble on the fitness of Blackburn, Sayer and Henderson when he named his side. The gamble never came off with all 3 having to be replaced in the first half hour of the game.

The game kicked off with a strong swirling wind making it nearly impossible to keep control of the ball, Seaham’s first attack saw Johnson play a one two with Gardiner before striking just wide. Bishops retaliated with a good run from Luke Hogan and cross into the area which Seaham’s keeper Jennison dealt with.

Good chances were at a minimum as both defences were on top, just before the break Seaham’s Lawson played in McRoberts whose shot was blocked.

Half Time 0-0

Seaham took the lead 3 minutes into the second period, Gardiner found Lawson free in the penalty area and his shot was blocked by keeper Lamb but Johnson reacted quickest to the rebound and forced the ball over the line. The goal obviously gave the visitors a lift and 7 minutes later Greenwood finished of the games best bit of play. McRoberts, Richardson and Hailes exchanged passes just inside the Bishops half, before McRoberts hit a 40 yard cross field pass inside the fullback for Greenwood to run onto. The speedy winger controlled the pass and went round the keeper before slotting into the empty net.

Seaham took control of the game and created 3 more good chances without converting any but were happy to come away with the victory.

Collingwood said after the game that although his gamble of playing three of his senior players who were carrying injuries didn’t come off, he was pleased with the way the replacements worked and had special praise for the youngsters in the side, Richardson, Lawson and particularly Greenwood played. He also had special mention for Johnson who did very well on the return to his former club.
